Nintendo Wii and DSi Shop channels have been unavailable for days

The Nintendo Wii and DSi Shop channels have been offline for several days, according to a report by Eurogamer† Both stores may have been offline for as long as March 16 without explanation from Nintendo.

A video from GameXplain shows exactly what happens when you select the Wii Shop Channel – you see a blank white screen followed by an error code (209601) indicating network problems. The channel is not available on either the Wii itself or the Wii U, which GameXplain uses to access the store. Meanwhile, the DSi Shop spits out error code 290502, which also indicates that it can’t connect to the store due to seemingly non-existent internet issues.

Nintendo stopped allowing players to make purchases on the DSi and Wii Shop channels in 2017 and 2019 respectively. However, Nintendo still allows players to download previously purchased games from both stores (at least while they were still online). When Nintendo first announced the Wii Store closing, it warned that players would no longer be able to retrieve or transfer purchased games using the Wii System Transfer Tool at some point in the future, but a firm date was never set.

This has made some players wonder: has that time come? now† It is unclear whether both stores are closed for maintenance or whether they closed unexpectedly. The edge contacted Nintendo with a request for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
