Google Cloud’s New Content Delivery Network Opens Up the Technology That Keeps YouTube Running

Companies like Netflix, Disney and HBO are vying for media streaming of movies and TV shows, but all of their services combined pale in comparison to YouTube, which says it delivers more than a billion hours of video streams every day. Now, Google Cloud is announcing the general availability of its Media CDN, a network that media companies can leverage for their own streaming experiences. Competitors like Microsoft Azure, Amazon CloudFront, Fastly and Cloudflare are already on the market, but none of them can point to the service that so many people use every day to sell their products.

As we noted two years ago, the world is streaming more video than ever, and it hasn’t slowed down since then. While we think a lot about the algorithms that drive engagement on YouTube, the actual network that gets the videos streamed makes everything work as well as it did since Google bought the video platform in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

The pitch was clearly set out in a statement released at the NAB Show Streaming Summit in 2022: “The same infrastructure Google has built over the past decade to deliver YouTube content to more than 2 billion users is now being used to deliver media across the world. scale to Google Cloud customers with Media CDN.”

YouTube has an occasional outage. But unless you’re willing to build the next Netflix, it could help keep things running, and now it’s available to more companies. It also includes support for modern transport protocols such as QUIC to use less data and deliver content smoothly – as well as the APIs that media companies use to serve ads – add real-time data feeds for live sports broadcasts and support new platforms.
